چکیده

aMonoaminergic projections from brainstem to cortex via the ascending reticular activating system are illustrated here. Perhaps one form of arousal is a stimulated type of external vigilance, with tense hyperarousal, putting the individual on the lookout for threats from the environment. This type of arousal may be mediated by the monoamines dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and acetylcholine via their ascending projections from the brainstem as part of the classical reticular activating system. The ability to activate this system enhances the survival of an individual in a hostile environment. Stimulants such as amphetamine and caffeine activate this system. Figure 1. Awakening to the psychopharmacology of sleep and arousal: novel neurotransmitters and wake-promoting drugs.

Exciting new developments in the psychopharmacology of wakefulness are clarifying the neurotransmitters, pathways, and drugs that impact this important physiologic state. Selectively inducing normal wakefulness without stimulating external vigilance may lead to therapeutic benefits not only in sleep disorders but also in cognitive disorders and conditions associated with fatigue.

Effects of tryptophan loading on verbal, spatial and affective working memory functions in healthy adults.

Serotonin (5-HT) appears to modulate affective behaviours by providing a homeostatic threshold around which other transmitters respond. This general principle of activity should hold for other types of behaviour, including cognition, but has not been extensively examined. We hypothesized, based on past findings, that increased 5-HT would constrain prefrontally guided working memory functions th...

Circadian and Ultradian Rhythms Modulating the Sensory Processing

The present review analyzes sensory processing during sleep and wakefulness from a single neuronal viewpoint. Our premises are that processing changes throughout the sleep– wakefulness cycle may be at least partially evidenced in single neurons by (a) changes in the discharge rate and firing pattern of the response to sound, (b) changes in the phase locking of the response to the hippocampal th...

Evaluation of Brain Neurotransmitters by Morpho-Functional Method

SUMMARY This review discribes some of the morphological tools which have allowed not only to discribe the chemical nature of neuronal pathways in the central nervous system but also to approach their physiology and their functions: Enzyme histochemistry; this technique shows the entity of an enzyme in nervous tissue. Immunocyto-histochemistry; based on antigenantibody reaction constitute the ...
